Almost two dozen bars, eating places and enjoyment businesses have each been awarded $5,000 grants by the town of Erie to help mitigate money losses they suffered all through the COVID-19 pandemic.
The grants, totaling $110,000, ended up permitted by Erie Metropolis Council on Wednesday.
The town gained a $76 million allocation of federal American Rescue System money from the $1.9 trillion federal stimulus monthly bill, signed into regulation in 2021 by President Joe Biden to assist in the restoration from the COVID-19 pandemic.
Council beforehand signed off on a program by Mayor Joe Schember to aid community corporations, lessen blight, enable fund environmental cleanups, assistance local artists, help metropolis bars, places to eat/ and leisure corporations offset COVID-19 relevant losses and fund other initiatives employing roughly $17 million in ARP resources.

The $5,000 ask for for Andy’s sparked discussion at Erie Town Council’s frequent conference on Wednesday evening since of fears about the business’ gown code and irrespective of whether it is discriminatory or imprecise.

The Rev. Lamont A. Higginbottom Sr., pastor of Erie’s Second Baptist Church and president of the African American Involved Clergy of Erie, posted on his personalized Fb page Sunday that he and his wife had been questioned to leave Andy’s that afternoon just after staying informed they were dressed “inappropriately for the institution.”
Higginbottom, who is Black, reported he was donning sweatpants, a hoodie and boots and felt the Andy’s gown code was an instance of “microaggression” aimed at excluding sure groups, together with persons of colour.
Andy’s co-owner Paul Schofield reported that apparel and many other merchandise of outfits are prohibited by a dress code at Andy’s that goes again 40 years and that the business enterprise does not discriminate.
